In a nutshell – Herbert is a Swiss entrepreneur with passion for startups, productivity, and sports

 

Herbert Bay, is co-founder and CEO of kooaba, a spin-off company from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. Kooaba hyperlinks objects in the real world with the digital world using image recognition on mobile phones.

Herbert holds a PhD in Computer Vision Studies from the ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich and a Masters Degree in Microengineering from the EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne.

As a student, he spent a year abroad in Montreal, Canada. It was there that he first developed an interest in Computer Vision.

After graduating from the EPFL in 2002, with several scientific publications to his name, he started his career at IBM Switzerland in Zurich. He was thoroughly trained in project management, sales and communication. Soon he was helping customers address their critical business challenges for e-learning projects as an Engagement Manager. He was also entrusted with teaching internal communication courses in Zurich and Geneva.

In 2003 undertook a PhD at the Computer Vision Lab of the ETH Zurich. During the course of his research, he published numerous scientific publications, developed a new algorithm for image recognition and 3D reconstruction based on digital images, and registered two patents.

After completing his PhD in 2006, he co-founded the company kooaba AG with Dr. Till Quack.

Subsequently Herbert Bay participated in an entrepreneurial workshop at Babson College in Boston, MA and in the IMD Executive MBA startup workshop in Silicon Valley in Palo Alto, CA.

Besides his passion for Internet startups, entrepreneurship, and productivity, Herbert is fund of offshore sailing.
